NURSING ASSOCIATES

A member of the nursing team who is registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

A Nursing Associate has undertaken a Foundation Degree and works with Healthcare Assistants and Registered Nurses delivering hands-on, person-centred care as part of the nursing team.

What is a Nursing Associate?

  • To practice as a Registered Nursing Associate you will complete a two-year Foundation Degree (FDSc); the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) Nursing Associate Programme is unique in so far as it is delivered by a hospital based programme team. The FDSc is awarded by De Montfort University (DMU) and all of the teaching will take place in the LLR School of Nursing Associates based at the Glenfield Hospital. On completion of the programme you will be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
  • As a Nursing Associate you will continue to work closely with patients, families and carers and will have the ability to support care planning and the delivery of person-centred care and will have a key role in providing effective health promotion. You will be able to lead care for an identified group of patients, including the administration of medicines, and practice autonomously within a defined scope of practice.

On completion of the FDSc Nursing Associate you will be supported through a detailed preceptorship programme to support you to embed your role in practice and grow your confidence as a registrant. There will be an opportunity to develop your career pathway towards Level 1 Registered Nurse through a degree apprenticeship at De Montfort University.
